The 2019 Oscars have been generating a lot of buzz for a while now, mostly for the wrong reasons. After choosing Kevin Hart to host the ceremony and then having him step down due the controversy surrounding the comedian’s tweets from the past, the awards committee has had to handle plenty of backlash from fans.
Perhaps to throw more positive news out, the Academy Awards have chosen to, for the first time, release shortlists in nine categories all at one time. And we are kicked about one particular selection: Nadine Labaki’s 2018 Lebanese film, Capernaum.
The film was in the running for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year and even received a fifteen-minute long standing ovation from viewers.
Capernaum has won its place on the shortlist along eight other choices, after having to compete with eighty-seven films that were submitted to the Academy members. The final nominations will be announced on January 22, 2019 and the Awards Ceremony will take place of February 24.
