Watch The Smart Home Of 2020 In Action

Technology companies are working hard to make your home smarter. In just a few years, the various gadgets and devices within a typical house will interact with each other. The goal: bringing more convenience to our everyday lives.

For example, you’ll never need to check the expiration date on your milk container because your refrigerator will tell you before it spoils. It’ll even send a message to your car as you drive past your local grocery store and remind you to pick up a gallon.

In some ways, the smart home revolution is already happening — in fact, more than a million homes in the U.S. are already outfitted with smart tech. According to research firm Gartner, a typical family home will have 500 smart devices by 2022.

It might take a few years for it to really take off — considering how infrequently people buy new appliances — but as manufacturers incorporate smarter technology into products, it’s only a matter of time before it hits the mainstream.

While it may be hard to visualize how a smart home may work,Mashable got a closer look during CES 2015 at how Samsung, Whirlpool and other big players are getting started and how your home will look.

It may not be the “flying car” concept we envisioned for the future, but it’s undoubtedly a step toward a more automated, high-tech lifestyle.
