GoPro Is Making Its Own Line Of Drones

GoPros are already often used with drones to capture unique videos and perspectives. Naturally, GoPro is cutting the middle man and trying its hand at developing its own drones.

The company, known for its high-durability action cameras, is putting together a line of multi-rotor helicopters that carry high-definition cameras, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The price tag will be between $500 and $1,000.

Due to drones’ current popularity, consumers have some pretty cheap options to play around with. DJI’s Phantom Drone, for example, retails at about $579, and the even cheaper Parrot MiniDrones sell for as cheap as $99. But GoPro’s expertise in action cameras could be a game changer for the market.

While it’s unclear how big an impact GoPro’s drones could have on the industry at large, some manufacturers could conceivably be inclined to stop supporting GoPro with their technology, as they would be assisting a direct competitor.

In October, GoPro released its latest Hero line of action cameras, which sell between $130 and $500. Though its cameras are known for being tough, we’ll have to wait to see how the GoPro’s drone technology holds up against its competitors. GoPro declined to comment on The Wall Street Journal report.
